Ask Before You Buy
You may want to be addressed on the following points before buying
a gemstone or its jewellery.
Ask before you buy an ‘emerald’
• The emerald you are buying is an ‘emerald’ or is just a ‘look-alike’?
• It is natural or synthetic?
• It is filled or unfilled?
• If filled, whether ‘oil’ or ‘resin’ is used
• What is the quantity of the filler present i.e. minor, moderate or significant
• Is the filler durable? What happens when the filler gets damaged?
• Is there a report available from an unbiased gem lab, disclosing the type and quantity of filler in the emerald?
Ask before you buy a ‘ruby’ or ‘sapphire’
• The ruby or sapphire you are buying are not just ‘look-alikes’
• The stone is natural or synthetic?
• It is natural or treated?
• Which type of treatment is done?
• Is it just heated? Or it has been processed through diffusion treatment?
• Whether ‘surface-diffusion’ or ‘beryllium-diffusion’ is done?
• Are there heating residues present?
• Are materials other than heating residues, such as glass, present in the fissures?
• Which type of glass is present – lead-based or silica-based?
• Has the colour been added to the glass-filler?
• Is the glass-filling of fissures durable and what happens when filler-glass gets damaged?
• Is there a report available from an unbiased gem lab, disclosing all types of treatments done on the ruby or sapphire?
Ask before you buy a ‘diamond’
• The diamond you are buying is a ‘diamond’ or is just a ‘look-alike’?
• It is natural or synthetic?
• Is it treated?
• Is it glass-filled?
• If it is colourless is it treated by High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)
• If it is colourless is it lasered?
• If it is coloured is it irradiated?
• Is there an identification and/or ‘grading-report’ available, issued by an unbiased gem lab?
• Does the report mentions about the presence of treatments?
• I want to re-check the grades with another laboratory
